How deep is the sea? Where do the whales sleep? Emma has a lot of important questions, but her mother is unable to focus on the little girl's questions. Emma stops talking to her, and moves to her own island with Aimo the Orangutan. He is a good listener, and they talk about hills, oceans and whales. But one day their island suddenly starts drifting away, over the page in the atlas, towards the darkest part of the ocean.

A heartfelt story about a mother-daughter relationship, big questions and a little girl who finds consolation in exploring imaginary worlds.

Maija Hurme

Maija Hurme likes to pick up influences for her stories from her own and others' children, nature, small strange objects and the environment. In Maija's opinion, picture books are important: "The pictures we see as children stay with us and can surface in one way or another later in life. Picture books must be of high quality and versatile, and there must be many narrators' voices and variety in the visual storytelling. Children's books are special because they are read again and again. A child learns language through books and feels a closeness with the reader. Reading aloud can be a wonderful, unique moment together with the child or a routine to get the children to sleep. Both are important!"
