Etana the Snail packs her shell full of pictures and picture books and goes on a journey overseas!
Etana Editions is heading to New York to organize an exhibition of contemporary Finnish illustration art, to meet friends, colleagues and fellow publishers, as well as to support the launch of our first title in the U.S. market, Marika Maijala’s Rosie Runs, published by Elsewhere Editions, a Brooklyn-based international children's book imprint devoted to luminous picture books in translation. The book is translated by Mia Spangenberg.
Our exhibit Picture a Picture Book – New Finnish Illustration by Etana Editions opens on Monday, Sept 25 at the Consulate General of Finland in New York, and will continue until Nov 24, 2023. The exhibition is curated by illustrator, author and publisher Jenni Erkintalo and includes illustrations by 12 renowned Finnish artists: Erkintalo, Maija Hurme, Erika Kallasmaa, Liisa Kallio, Réka Király, Marika Maijala, Laura Merz, Aino-Maija Metsola, Meria Palin, Karoliina Pertamo, Hannamari Ruohonen, and Anne Vasko.
In collaboration with Scandinavia House – The Nordic Center in America in New York we will also hold a panel discussion The Art of Making Picture Books on Tuesday, Sept 26 at 7 pm at Volvo Hall, Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue. Free admission, although advance registration is recommended.
The panelists Marika Maijala, Jenni Erkintalo and Mia Spangenberg will discuss their work across art making, translation, and children’s book-making, while sharing visuals of Rosie Runs at various stages of the making process. The topics of the talk include how Nordic children’s picture book authors and illustrators work together, as well as the role of the editor and publisher in the process; the importance of images as well as pre-production work; the meaning and the work of translators; and current trends and challenges in the Nordic children’s picture book world.
